The second* forum sponsored by The AIDS Institute of the New York State Department of Health on the use of social media was held

This forum was intended to present ways to improve health communications, specifically how social media and other technologies and strategies are helping to redefine public health messaging and engagement with consumers.
Representatives of organizations and agencies that provide HIV and STD services heard introductory remarks by Humberto Cruz, Director of the AIDS Institute, and Dr. Monica Sweeney, Assistant Commissioner for the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The moderator of the Forum was Miguel Gomez, Director of AIDS.gov, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Three distinguished speakers addressed what can be learned from social marketing and applied to HIV and STD communications, what message structures are most likely to result in desired behaviors, and how messages for multicultural individuals and populations can be more effectively designed.

William Smith, EdD, Editor of Social Marketing Quarterly and one of the country's most experienced social marketers, internationally known for his expertise in public health communications with particular interest in behavior research and evaluation.
Punam Keller, PhD, the Charles Henry Jones Third Century Professor of Management at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College, and collaborator in creation of the CDC's soon to be released online public health message development and evaluation tools.
Jessica Faye Carter, JD, MBA, CEO of the Heta Corporation, a strategic advisory firm providing consultation to strengthen relationships with multicultural communities and women and to improve use of social technologies.
